When people learn that I upcycle magazines into wallets they often tell me they have tons of magazine they could give me, but assume I only want "fashion-ey" ones.
They couldn't be more wrong.
While I love Italian Vogue, POP, Nylon and Muse, I have plenty of room in my heart for Mother Earth News and Ladybug. You never know where pretty patterns are going to emerge.
I recently scored big on a stack of 1970's American Art magazines for twelve cents each (They were a quarter and it was 50% off day). Not only do I love them for the art, but I love the advertisements.
The photo above is an image from the cover of one. The colors are gorgeous and I'll probably use in it a large piece so I can keep it intact.
This page will be cut into smaller pieces to make the stripes and borders on cardholders though that center piece may find a home:
I can promise you many of these little squares will look totally different when paired up with the right focal image.
For more of my work, you can take a look at the wallet gallery or check out the shop, though my inventory is a little low.
Today is a work day and it's going to be a long one...not making wallet, but on another project. Good thing I made a pot of this yesterday. I've never been so enchanted with a vegetarian recipe in my whole life! It's food of the Gods. I let the onions carmelize until they were a deep dark golden and used brown rice. I cannot tell you how rich it is. I'll need it later. I'm counting on Mark to find some really good and crusty rolls.
By the way, I love etsy's Quit Your Day Job posts. They're so inspiring and even though I did quit my day job a long time ago, I still use them as motivation to do better and find new ways to make it all work.
