I can’t say I’m a huge baseball fan, but it seems appropriate to open my blog and the month with a reference I associate more with spring than baseball anyway. I’m not entirely new to blogging, but this feels very new as it will be the first time I have blogged just about me (as opposed to reviewing local restaurants and shops)!
I discovered the world of crafty/foodie/thrifty blogging last year and have lost hours reading blogs written by women from all over the world. I’ll admit the glimpses into the lives many bloggers create for us…perfect homes, perfect art, perfect food, perfect marriages or dating lives, perfect moms, lovely Sunday afternoons spent in bliss, along with the little jokes about how it really isn’t so perfect have both inspired and depressed me.
Yet, I also realize many bloggers at least admit they carefully choose which corners of the house to post pictures of and that they don’t post pictures of the cake that didn’t turn out or give details of the time their husband wasn’t willing to watch the kids while they went thrift shopping alone. I appreciate these blogs the most…they spare us the soap opera while at the same time clueing us into the idea that is isn’t all blissful and they aren’t Nigella Lawson every waking minute.
I chose to use my kitchen in the title, because it is a tiny imperfect thing that makes me happy. I don’t have stainless steel appliances (yet!), organized drawers, a gas range, new cabinets, granite countertops, a tile backsplash, a fridge with the freezer on the bottom and all the other things that I long for, yet I love my kitchen with its orange walls and 30 year old cabinets badly in need of refinishing. Magical things happen there and I’m part of it.
My kitchen is an example of how it is possible to love and accept something as it is and yet know you want to change it; that all of it deserves to be better or at least evolve into something else...this is how I feel about many things in my life right now…my body, my house, my garden, my marriage and my career.
Oh, and it is also about my obsession for cute things, mermaids, lipstick, Mary Jane heels, vintage towels, vintage lingerie (that I cannot wear as I’ve moved well beyond plus sized model proportions), cool pens, rose otto, cookies, chewy brownies, baths, cool fabric, 70’s tablecloths, good music, great books and cupcakes!!!!
