Very early this morning Mark asked, "Guess who died?" I had no clue. He said, "Paul Newman". I felt sad and said, "Well, it's not a tragedy, he wasn't cut down in his prime, but I'll miss him. I always liked him." Then I went about my day. I composed a nice blog post about him in my mind and a little while ago I set about writing it.
However, something felt off because the front page of yahoo wasn't covered with stories about his death. I chalked it off to a generational thing and was pretty disgusted that a celebrity who actually deserved to be revered was getting short shrift.
Then, I looked on wikipedia for the name of his first wife and it caught my attention that he died two years ago. Oh yeah...right. I knew that.
I called Mark and said, "Paul Newman died two years ago?????" Mark said, "I know." I was like, "But you told me he died!!!" To which Mark laughed and replied, "Well, he did." I hung up on his gleeful cackling and deleted my post. Jeez.
I'm susceptible to his pranks anyway, but early in the morning? That's just dirty pool. I hadn't even had coffee or anything!
However, sometimes Mark's little jokes don't go so well. Once, when he ran across the street to get us ice cream at a convenience store I got a call from him pretending to be a guy he used to go to school with who was selling insurance. Naturally, I knew it was Mark disguising his voice and said all kinds of things only a wife would say to her husband who was holding up the ice cream delivery with jokes. Except....it wasn't Mark playing a joke. Agahahaahaha! That poor guy.
And there's also the time I mooned the totally caught off guard cable guy while saying something suggestive and kind of gross because I thought it was Mark opening our bedroom door. I mean, who tells the cable guy that it's OK to go on into the bedroom without letting his wife know anyway?? I screamed, "Oh my God!" as soon as I saw it wasn't Mark and the cable guy shut the door and left! Mark heard me scream, but didn't hear what I said before the scream (as I was on the bed and exposed!), but it was his turn to be embarrassed because it kind of looked liked we'd botched our attempt at adding a third party to the mix and that maybe we were the creepy people you read about in various forums! He was totally horrified and said he thought I was at my desk. Ha! It was awful, but we began laughing about it almost immediately!
Anyway, the picture above is the Paul Newman I love most. I think it's incredible.
